Buying an FW

Q: Where is the best place to buy a Featherweight?

A: You know that I'm going to say from a specialist dealer who will have thoroughly checked out the machine, fully serviced and adjusted it and given it the vital electrical safety check. It should also come with a guarantee

That said, I'm not suggesting you should pass up any ultra-cheap machine you see at a yard sale. There are real bargains to be found but simply allow some dollars to have the machine checked over professionally.

Possibly the worst place is from a source who knows the value of the item but gives none of the services or backup mentioned above. The saving of a few dollars this way can come back to haunt you again and again.

Q: What should I check when buying an FW?

A: The short answer is to sew with it, on a variety of different fabrics and thicknesses—and even if all appears well, still allow for an electrical safety check before you plug it in at home.

Q: What parts are likely to be worn on an old used FW?

A: Provided that the machine has been well cared for, only the motor might be showing its age—and this can be easily rebuilt to as-new condition
